It seems like just yesterday that Cardi B announced her collaboration with Fashion Nova to launch the #FashionNovaCARES initiative. But doesn’t time just fly during quarantine?
While some of us have kept busy counting the days until we can safely venture out of our homes again, the 27-year-old rapper, mother, and self-made millionaire were keeping herself occupied with helping families all across America make ends meet. Ever since announcing the #FashionNovaCARES initiative on Instagram in mid-April, Fashion Nova and Cardi fans have been posting stories about themselves, their best friends, and their families in the hopes of getting some much-needed relief.
Whether fans are coming to the contest due to an inability to file unemployment, the loss of fulltime work, or health problems, one thing is clear: Cardi’s reach is wide. With no one else to turn to in a time of huge need, so many contestants have been pouring out their hearts to the rapper on social media. The response has been both overwhelming and humbling for the artist, who took to Twitter recently to say of the charity effort: “We don’t give to show,” noting that, “some people don’t want the world to know they got help.” Down-to-earth as ever, Cardi is proving her commitment to Americans by reaching out to those who appeal to her for help. “Tell me your stories,” she asked fans when the contest began. Stories simply started flooding in.
Helping Her Community
As Cardi has proven through past philanthropy, it’s not enough to be all talk and no action, especially in times of crisis. Since April 12th when the contest was announced, Cardi B and Fashion Nova have given out $1000 to winners every hour. The giveaway will last until May 20th. The #FashionNovaCARES initiative currently features hundreds of winners from all across the country giving testimonials about how COVID-19 has changed their lives forever.
Don’t’ miss: Markie Post Biography
“I am an ICU nurse working in Texas,” writes Ka’nisha in Texas. “I have a one-year-old child and her father has lost his job due to this pandemic.” Juanita from Colorado Springs wrote to the rapper: “I’m a single mom of 4, I could use the money to pay next month’s rent. Two of my kids have disabilities, I can’t afford to be out on the streets. I would be forever grateful for your help.” She was one of the first hundred recipients to take home the prize. From Atlanta, Tamara wrote: “My fiancé and I just got laid off at the same time…We are behind $600 on rent. This would truly help us and our son continue to eat for at least the next week.” They came to the right place.
Making Relief Count
As one of the most relatable celebrities out there, Cardi B knows the value of a dollar. She’s written about, rapped about it, and now, she’s standing behind it. Cardi was one of the first celebrities to spread information about Coronavirus on social media. She remains one of the influencers at the forefront of the movement to gain and distribute knowledge about the virus rather than waiting on the government to give us funds or answers.
Cardi B isn’t alone in stepping up to the challenge presented by COVID-19. Several outspoken actors have taken to Twitter and Instagram in the wake of the shut down to urge their fan base not to go out, to remain six feet apart at all times, and to wear a mask. Leonardo DiCaprio recently launched a new fund to help ensure that American kids don’t go hungry. Lady Gaga planned a virtual concert and fundraiser for COVID-19 relief. But while Cardi B isn’t the only celeb taking time away from her busy life to help out the public, she’s the one who’s putting herself out there in a serious way.
Just last week, Facebook and Instagram announced a collaboration with Cardi B and other A-list artists and influencers like Oprah Winfrey, Lil Nas X, Simone Biles, Awkwafina, Jennifer Garner and Matthew McConaughey for a virtual graduation ceremony to celebrate the class of 2020. Cardi recorded a special message for the graduates, congratulating them and telling them “don’t let no coronavirus or nothing take this special moment from you.” Cardi goes on to emphasize the importance of choosing the right career and being true to yourself as a young person. Cardi would know: The “Hustlers” star has always endeared herself to fans by speaking the truth and being honest about her experience of life.

#FashionNovaCARES Steps Up
This isn’t the first time Fashion Nova has stood behind an honorable cause. During 2018 Pride, the fashion brand collaborated with singer Kehlani to bring $50,000 worth of funding to LBGTQ+ charities across America. The brand has also sponsored feminist events like Amber Rose’s Slutwalk for several years. Known for promoting a positive body image and adored by celebrities like Kylie Jenner, Teana Taylor, and Saweetie, the Instagram-friendly fashion brand has been helping celebrities fundraise for causes they believe in for some time now. With Cardi B on board, it’s no wonder the #FashionNovaCARES initiative is unstoppable.
All we can say is thank you, Cardi. In the words of one winner, “Thank you for helping the world!”
