Water and Histamine? Let’s see how it rolls!
Histamine is a neurotransmitter, meaning a chemical, released in your brain. It is a protein which acts as a hormone. It is an exciting part of our endocrine system. Though, It has some interesting functions to perform such as regulation of vasodilation and secretion of gastric acid in the stomach. Still, it can also be a little harmful if it is released a little more than it should be.
Effects Of Increased Histamine
Naturally, Histamine should not be in great amounts as it has some properties, due to that, it can make you want to have a doctor’s appointment as soon as possible. Some common and minor effects of this increased chemical are headaches, dizziness, and sometimes a cold sensation every once in a while.
Meanwhile, a significant increase can cause severe health problems like nausea, vomiting, breathing issues, and tachycardia, and that can lead to cardiac arrest which can even take your life! Now you know, that an increase of this compound is a serious risk that you should take as such.
Water Or Antihistamine?
In medical institutes, controlling Histamine is pretty basic. Some medicines known as Antihistamine follow the protocols prescribed by your doctors and you will be good to go. But we already know that most of the drugs are highly chemically synthesised and, therefore, they have side effects as well.
In contrast, Water can be an alternative to help lower your Histamine levels. However, it does not have a direct connection. Water does influence the levels, as the hydrated body does not release much histamine. Therefore, it will remain normal or lower than the danger amount.
Rise Of Histamine Due To Dehydration
So, you are not drinking enough water. What happens now? Dehydration!. Dehydration is one of the reasons for the spike in Histamine levels. By not drinking enough water, you will give your body stress and this can trigger this certain neurotransmitter to overflow in your body. Especially in your stomach.
Histamine is commonly found in our stomach and when our stomach is upset, we will get diarrhoea and that will cause further dehydration than before. Thus, more of these chemicals are in the body than they are supposed to be.
Allergic Reactions And Water
Some foods can increase Histamine levels in the body. Spoiled foods and fermented ones are ones that usually have a lot of this neurotransmitter in them. Some fish that are not kept at certain temperatures also develop higher levels of this chemical.
Dairy products also contain Histamine so one should always be careful with their diary diet. Alcoholic and thc infused drinks should not be consumed much as they can elevate Histamine level in body. It is best to be cautious about what goes into the body.
Seasonal allergies such as runny nose, sneezing, and itching are often caused by Histamine because it is responsible for the inflammation caused in the body. However, Water intake can reduce the impact of burning, itching, and most of the inflammation. Equally important, water does not help in a serious allergic reaction.
Diamine Oxidase (DAO) and Water’s Influence
Diamine Oxidase is the enzyme responsible for breaking down Histamine in the gut, it works more efficiently when the body is properly hydrated. Dehydration can potentially impair diamine oxidase function, leading to reduced Histamine breakdown and rise in Histamine levels. By drinking enough water, the body remains in an optimal state for enzymes like DAO to function properly.

In the end, water alone is not sufficient for the reduction of Histamine levels but it can definitely have an impact when it is drunk enough to keep up with the needs of our body. Considering it can help before our system acts all wrong, it can be the best example of prevention is better than cure in most cases as well.
