Is “quality over quantity” your motto when it comes to clothing? Would you gladly spend a fortune on a stylish, high-quality piece that fits you like a glove? If so, you probably know that those perfect items are so hard to find, so when you do actually track them down, it is important to take good care of them. Otherwise, they won’t last long and will quickly lose their original shine. Do not worry, looking after your fashion pieces is not as hard as it sounds. Follow these tips and your expensive pieces will look great on you for years to come.
1. Don’t keep your Clothing Cramped inside your Closet
If your closet is overstocked you need to buy a bigger closet or get rid of some of your clothing. When your clothes are cramped inside your closet they tend to wrinkle in all the worst places. Also, they quickly lose their original shape and even start to discolour. Giving your clothes enough space to breathe by storing them properly will help you keep them in top shape for longer.
2. Stay Green
Taking care of our planet sometimes includes small steps, such as opting for an eco friendly laundry detergent or not washing your clothes so frequently. But did you know that the latter can also benefit your wardrobe? Dunking your clothes in the wash even when they are not dirty can quickly wear them out, so steam them instead of washing them whenever possible. A lot of couture clothes should be only dry cleaned, so read those labels carefully before you put your expensive clothing items in the laundry bin.
3. Give your Dryer a Break
As you probably know, your dryer can shrink your clothes, but that is not all. All that tumbling can quickly leave your clothes looking worn out, while those dryer sheets are a nightmare for sensitive fibres. Therefore, avoid putting your clothing in the dryer whenever you can and hang them up to dry.
4. Give your delicate a bit of Extra Love
Your bras and panties can easily get damaged if you do not place them in a mesh bag before you put them in the washer. When it comes to the dryer, your bras should never see the inside of it. Otherwise, they will come out looking more like your scrunchy than lingerie. The best way to keep your delicates looking brand new is to wash them by hand, and then let them air dry. When your bras are dry, make sure they lay flat in your drawer. Folding them will make them lose shape quickly.
5. Do not Leave your Clothes in the Dryer
How many times have you left your dry clothes in the machine for hours, or even days? It is not uncommon for people to take the clothes out of the dryer only when it is time for the next load to dry. Unfortunately, this can harm your clothes. The best way to minimise the damage caused by the dryer is to fold or hang your clothes the minute the dryer program is complete.
6. Remove those Stains Immediately
Even the worst stains can quickly come out if you take care of them the moment they appear, and you won’t even have to use any strong detergents or stain removers. On the other hand, even those seemingly harmless stains won’t go away if you do not tend to them for a long time. Therefore, the moment you spill something on your clothes, work on that stain, and your attire will thank you.
7. Prevent Colour Fading
When you splurge on a fashionable piece of clothing, you want it to look as good as new for as long as possible. Colour fading is a big problem that luckily comes with a simple solution. The trick lies in the salt. Add one or two spoons of salt when you are washing your clothes, and they will keep their original colour. However, if you are washing something for the first time, remember to soak it first separately for about half an hour in salt water. In case you are washing something dark, turn your clothes inside out and do not dry them in direct sunlight or they will fade.
Follow these tips and your clothes will look brand new even after years of wearing them.
