Working out can be a bore, there’s no doubt about that! It’s why so many workout trends pass us by and it can be hard to commit to a routine even with the best intentions. That’s why we should strive to make exercise just another normal part of our life. Heading out for a jog, going for an evening swim, or taking a Zumba class with your friend should be just another mark on your calendar!
But if you’re not really an exercise person and you’re looking to change that, this can be a hard adjustment to make. And we’re here to help! Check out the tips below that’ll make exercise more accessible and just another thing you can do with your time. Let’s make it far less intimidating and enjoyable for all ages.
Try Different Activities on Different Days
If you’re worried about getting bored with your workout, and that’s why you don’t do one very often, switch it up! Do different routines and activities on different days, and then settle down on the one you don’t get tired of. If you take the time to experiment, you can find an activity you truly love to do, and there’s simply no pressure involved.
This way, you don’t have to push yourself, you won’t feel bad about a ‘lack’ of exercise, and you’ll be happy to come back again. So if you want to take a class, take a few at a time, and get to know the people involved. See if you rub along with them. And never be afraid to cut and cancel a gym membership if something better is going elsewhere!
Set Up For Sport in Your Garden
If you’ve got a backyard or a lawn going spare, it might be a good idea to set it up to play sports on. For example, if you love watching baseball on the TV, you could get your own baseball hitting net to play in. This way you can head out there whenever you want to and have a game of your own, no need for other players or even a set of rules. It’s just a casual activity you can have fun with that you don’t need to go far for.
It’s not just baseball you can set up out there. Two plant pots can act as goal edges for a game of soccer and you can set up a net in the middle of the lawn for tennis. Your only limit is your imagination here! Bring the exercise to you, and it’ll be so much easier to keep up with a fully involved routine.
Rope in Your Friends
If you’ve got friends who complain about not exercising enough, why not rope them in as well? And this is especially true if you don’t get to see them very often; mix in the social aspect, and everyone will want to come along. Ask them to come along to back garden sports sessions or to join you down your favorite weekly club – it’s much easier to go along with a friend than to try and face it alone!
You can have more fun with your time exercising when you’ve got a friend there too. You both know the other’s limits, what it takes to fire them up and get motivated, and it’s hard to be intimidated by any exercises when there are two of you. So sit down together and talk about the joint workouts you could try; even having an accountability partner is a step in the right direction.
Set Small Goals That Gradually Get Bigger
You don’t have to overhaul your life when you’ve got little goals that act as stepping stones. You won’t suddenly have to commit to an intensive training routine that’ll have you down the gym every day either!
Set a little goal you can reach fairly easily, and then up the challenge each time. For example, this week you need to manage more than 3 circuits, and then next week you try a more intensive circuit. Little things you can recognise the progress through – it’s how a school class would get you to move on!
Exercise can be a normal (and even fun!) part of your schedule. You’ve just got to find easy ways to fit it in, so be sure to keep the points above in mind. So if you’re keen to get exercising, start small and work your way up.
